Install guide

Artificial Grass Install Step by Step

An overview of a typical backyard install. Questions along the way? Call or text us.

  1. Measure your area

Measure length and width at the widest points. For odd shapes, break the yard into rectangles and add them up. Turf comes in 15 ft wide rolls, so plan which way the rolls will run.

What you need: Use the calculator below

  2. Remove grass and dig out

Remove sod, weeds and roots, then excavate about 3 to 4 inches below the finished height. Mark and protect sprinkler lines.

  3. Build and compact the base

Spread crushed rock or road base, wet it and compact it with a plate compactor. Grade it smooth with a slight slope so water runs off.

What you need: Base rock is sourced locally

  4. Lay weed barrier

Roll weed barrier over the compacted base and pin it down with U-staples.

What you need: Weed barrier & staples

  5. Roll out and cut the turf

Unroll the turf and let it relax in the sun. Make sure every piece faces the same direction so the color matches. Trim edges from the back with a turf cutter.

What you need: Turf · Turf cutter

  6. Seam and secure

Join pieces with seaming tape and adhesive. Stretch the turf tight with a knee kicker and nail the edges every few inches and across the field.

What you need: Seam tape, adhesive & nails

  7. Add infill and brush

Spread infill evenly with a drop spreader, then brush the blades upright. Use zeolite infill in pet areas to control odor.

    What you need: Infill

DIY questions

Frequently Asked

How much turf should I order?

Order enough for your area plus 5 to 10% extra for cuts and trimming. Rolls are 15 ft wide, so the direction the rolls run affects how much you need. The calculator above works this out for you.

Can I really install turf myself?

Yes. Small and medium yards are very doable with a free weekend, a helper and a rented plate compactor. The base prep is the hardest part. Call or text us any time with questions.

How heavy are the rolls?

Full rolls are heavy and long, often several hundred pounds. Have two or more people ready to move them, or ask us about having the turf cut to the lengths you need.

What infill do I need for dogs?

Use zeolite infill in any area pets use. It traps ammonia from urine. Many installers put zeolite down first and top it with silica sand.

Do you deliver to homes?

Yes. Our own trucks deliver within 150 miles of Bakersfield, and we ship freight to homes across the USA.
